It was quite a disappointment that we failed to achieve the relatively simple task of having dinner in a non-smoking environment – on a night consecrated to non-smoking! It showed a major lack of determination in the pubs’ policy, and showed that the reason they agreed to support the cause is probably for the free publicity they got. Would’ve been finer if they just posted a ‘smoke-friendly environment‘ sign. How sad! But let’s not look at the negatives only, there were many pubs who achieved the non-smoking night challenge.
Check out Liliane’s post about the matter, which encouraged me to write this post because I couldn’t agree more with her, and I was at the event and was disappointed.
For photos of the event, check out the Daily Star’s Star Scene photos from the night.

It’s called lack of ethics and is quite common around here… unfortunately.

Many countries have banned smoking in public places. But anti-smoking legislation would be unenforceable in Lebanon. We can’t even enforce basic traffic laws or littering in this country. What a sad state of affairs we’re in…

cause there’s this thing abt “typical lebanese people” that makes them brag about violating the rules :S
i think that they misinterpret the concept of freedom and openness… unfortunately!!!

Sad but true! Such incidents really happened but in a few places only. Being one of the organizers myself, I can confidently tell you that very few participating pubs disrespected their agreement with us at the very last minute!!… Typical Lebanese behavior of not sticking to their word!!!! What a shame!
However, most of the participating places have fully supported the initiative and smokers were asked to smoke outside!! Hard luck for having such an incident but you can’t generalize on all the event being a failure or a joke! It is evident that vandalizers are everywhere! We just made a point that people do want non-smoking nights and we’re on the right track of getting there!! be sure! We just need more support from you guys.
P.S. If I were in your shoes, I would have COMPLAINED BIG TIME, MADE IT A POINT TO THE MANAGER and LEFT THE PLACE WITHOUT CONTINUING THE NIGHT THERE OR PAYING THE BILL!!! THIS LEAVES A STRONGER IMPACT AND MAKES THEM RETHINK THAT THEY WILL ALSO LOSE BUSINESS IF THEY DON’T RESPECT NON-SMOKERS!!!
Cheers

You’re kidding?! For once we came up with a decent rule and they don’t even bother applying it? Not even for ONE NIGHT? That’s really very disappointing.
